Introductions

Blog Conversations will all be done in this forum. In order to respond to my post you must comment at the bottom of the conversation. In order to reply to other people's comment you will hit "reply" under their comment.

To begin, please share with everyone your name, school district, title, background in education, experience thus far with Common Core Math and what you hope to accomplish by attending this online workshop.

(Also, for the planners out there, I plan to make a new post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday of each week to try and be consistent.)

  1. Hello,
I am Julie Abramo and I work at Maryvale Intermediate School. I am a third grade teacher and also the grade level coordinator. I have been teaching for 15 years, this is the start of my 16th. In our building, we decided to go team teaching. So, for the past 2 years I was only teaching ELA and my students rotated with my other 2 teammates for Math and Science/SS. This year, I have one team teacher. He teaches my students ELA and SS and I teach Math and Science to both of our classes. This is my first year teaching math since we adopted the Modules. I am almost finished with Module 1. Prior to that our building used the Envision math books and we added the CC lessons that we needed to meet the standards. I am hoping to learn a bit more with what would be successful or supplemental to the Math Modules.

  2. Hello! My name is Kelly Block and I am a fifth grade consultant teacher at Lewiston-Porter IEC. I have been a teacher for 18 years. This is my 6th year working as a team with Janelle Sandonato-Siuta, the general education teacher. Janelle and I have been using Common Core math and modules for 3 years. We are comfortable with many concepts, but want to learn more about the progressions of standards and expectations across grade levels. Janelle and I enjoy taking staff development courses together so that we can continually learn new ideas to better meet the needs of our students.

  4. Hello! My name is Janelle Sandonato-Siuta, and I am a 5th grade teacher in a consultant teacher program. I am also the 5th grade department chair. I have been teaching at Lew-Port for 13 years and for the last 6 years I have teamed with Kelly Block. Kelly and I have been using Common Core math and modules for 3 years. We are comfortable with many concepts, but want to learn more information about the progression of standards and curriculum across grade levels. It is great taking staff development with Kelly so we are able to collaborate more effectively.

  5. Hi everyone! My name is Kyle Hurtgam and I am a consultant teacher at Lew-Port High School. I started teaching in 2010 and taught high school math for 2 years, moved to CleveHill as a co-teacher for 3 years, and am now at Lew-Port as a consultant teacher in 10th grade. I have been in many trainings at CleveHill where we would find the differences in the old vs. new curriculum, but have never had to teach a course that was based upon common core standards. I hope to gain an understanding of how our younger grades are learning, so that I can relate the material to our high school students.

  6. Hello everyone:) My name is Tara and I teach middle school math at Alden Middle School. I taught Math 7, 8 and Math A/Integrated Math for the first 12 years and then moved to AIS Math and Computers for the last 2 years. Since my Masters is in Educational Computing, I am excited to be teaching computers but my true love is still math. I feel like I get the best of both worlds by teaching both. We have been working with CC for a few years and supplemented with modules when possible. I am hoping to gain a deeper understanding of the how's and why's and learn the progression better from the bottom up. Looking forward to working with all of you:)

  7. Hi...My name is Laree DeFranco. I have been working in the Lewiston-Porter school district for almost 22 years. The majority of the that time has been in third grade. I received my bachelors and masters in education from Texas A&M Univerisity. This is the third year using the NYS math modules in the IEC at Lew-Port, which is the only experience I have had with Common Core Math. I am interested in becoming more knowledgeable with the progressions. After using the modules for 2 full years, my grade level is trying to find ways to tweak what the state has provided. The lessons are very scripted and long. We want students to enjoy math, so finding ways to spark more enthusiasm is key.

  8. Hi all, sorry I am late to the party. My name is Kristin Smith and I have been teaching for 18 years now. I have co-taught 7th and 8th grade classes as a consultant teacher at Alden Middle School. This year, my role is as a 7th and 8th grade consultant math and science teacher, so I am focusing more heavily on math instruction and improving student learning in those areas. I am also a parent of two children - one in middle school and one in high school. My high schooler was part of the "guinea pig" group impacted by the roll out of common core, and his cohort group was the first to experience much of the implementation right up through Algebra and Geometry. There is a lot that I like about Common Core standards, especially that they are promoting independent thinking, multiple approaches and problem solving skills. I see a large amount of frustration when teacher try to marry Common Core state requirements, EngageNY modules, and district initiatives. From this class, I hope to develop a better understanding of the math instruction the kids coming up to us from the elementary grades experience.
