Final Reflection

Final thoughts: (must be completed to receive credit)

This post will be your opportunity to comment about what you have gained from this workshop. Please be sure to look back at the original post and review the objectives to see if you gained new knowledge based on the objectives. It would also be nice if you could comment on others posts as well before finishing the course. (You have until Saturday 11/07)

If you wouldn't mind breaking your final post into two parts: What have you learned and final reflection, you can do them within the same comment.  YOU DO NOT HAVE TO ANSWER ALL THE QUESTIONS BELOW, Pick the ones that you feel best to answer.

Here are some questions to guide you in your final post on WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED:
- What conceptual understanding of  base ten does a student need in order to solve operational problems?
- What instructional strategies would you use to reach students at various levels of mathematical ability?
- What opportunities should students be given to assist with building their conceptual understanding of numbers and operations?
- What model do you find most beneficial in building understanding?

Questions based on the objectives of this workshop for your FINAL REFLECTION:
- What type of FOCUS do you need in your grade level to help a student be successful with numbers and operations?
- How can you work together within AND across grade levels to ensure COHERENCE?
- How do you maintain proper RIGOR in your instruction; including conceptual understanding, fluency and application?

A final survey will be sent from the Teacher Center in order to receive your completion certficates

Sum it Up!

We have worked through the progression of Base Ten Numbers and Operations in grades k-5.

It is important we continue to engage in conversation around the coherence of math standards throughout the elementary common core standards.

For this comment I would like you to share one resource you have come across in relation to Math and Common Core that helps us with coherence. It can be a website, video, story or anything you feel is worth sharing with the group.

There is a video that I came across that I think helps teachers better explain to parents and the public why we are teaching common core. I understand there is a lot of controversy on this topic, I think this video does a good job discussing this :-)

Also, please comment on either my video or another participants resource that they have shared.

Fifth Grade

5th Grade: 5.NBT

1. Begin by reading pages 18-20 of the Math Progression Document and look for new understanding and/or important aspects of Numbers and Operations in Base-Ten in 5th grade

2. Watch the following video on standard 5NBT from EngageNY Studio Talks located here: Click Here

3. Post One Comment about something new you learned, an important aspect of 5th grade that other grade levels need to know or an instructional strategy/model that you would use to help solidify the work in the 5th grade. Try and relate your new learning of 5th grade numbers and operations to what you learned previously in grades K-4, and offer an idea about addressing Fluency in 5th grade.

4. Post one comment responding to another participant in order to add to their thinking, suggest additional ideas or engage in a meaningful educational conversation about COHERENCE thus far.

Fourth Grade

4th Grade: 4.NBT

1. Begin by reading pages 13-17 of the Math Progression Document and look for new understanding and/or important aspects of the 4th Grade NBT standards

2. Watch the following video on standard 4NBT from EngageNY Studio Talks located here: Click Here

3. Post One Comment about something new you learned about multiplication and division that other grade levels need to know or an instructional strategy/model that you would use to help in the 4th grade instruction of the 4NBT standards.

Think about some of the following questions:
-what model would you use and why?
      -why teach partial products?
-why does base-ten foundations play such an important role in multiplying and dividing?
     - why has common core shifted more towards conceptual understanding instead of the "old way" of teaching an algorithms?

4. The 4th grade Progression is very Model involved. Please also comment on each other posts addressing your questions, comments and concerns about these Models and their application in the classroom. (Take a second look at Page 17 and discuss the different methods if applicable)

Third Grade

3rd Grade: 3.NBT

1. Begin by reading page 12 of the Math Progression Document and look for new understanding and/or important aspects of 3rd grade and fluency.

2. Watch the following video on standard 3.NBT from EngageNY Studio Talks located here: Click Here  (You may stop the video at 9:50)

3. Post One Comment about how students use their understanding of Place Value to round and what is the important relationship between addition and subtraction students need to learn.

4. Post one comment responding to another participant in order to add to their thinking, suggest additional ideas or engage in a meaningful educational conversation about 3rd grade and what you have learned or can use in your classroom based on what you have learned.

Second Grade

Grade 2: 2.NBT
Based on my experience thus far, 2nd grade seems to be the level where teachers begin to struggle with the different models and conceptual understanding that needs to be taught. Pay close attention to this section, as it is crucial in laying the foundation for Operations. Also, if you have have experience with teaching these Common Core Standards and Models, please share any additional classroom experience you may have!

1. Begin by reading pages 8-11 of the Math Progression Document and look for new understanding and/or important aspects of base-ten understanding and numbers within 1000. Please try and comment about a concept or new understanding from this document.

2. Watch the following video on standard 2.NBT from EngageNY Studio Talks located here: Click Here

3. Post One Comment about something new you learned, an important aspect of 2nd grade that other grade levels need to know or an instructional strategy/model that you would use to help solidify addition and subtraction. Try and relate your new learning of 2nd grade to what you learned previously in grades K and 1.

4. Post one comment responding to another participant in order to add to their thinking, suggest additional ideas or engage in a meaningful educational conversation about second grade. Offer a suggestion to help with fluency or a resource you may have used.

First Grade

Grade 1: 1.NBT

1. Begin by reading pages 6 and 7 of the Math Progression Document and look for new understanding and/or important aspects of numbers and general Base-Ten methods for adding and subtracting

2. Watch the following video on standard 1.NBT from EngageNY Studio Talks located here: Click Here

3. Post One Comment about something new you learned, an important aspect of First Grade Numbers and Operations that other grade levels need to know and/or an instructional strategy/model that you would use to help with the understanding of Place Value and Properties of Operations to add and subtract . Try and relate your new learning in First Grade to what you learned about Kindergarten  from the video and/or progression document.

4. Post one comment responding to another participant in order to add to their thinking, suggest additional ideas or engage in a meaningful educational conversation about First Grade and how it relates to the current grade that you teach.
